If you’ve ever seen the hit movie 21, a semi reality-based film about a team of M.I.T. students and their cunning professor who set out to card count their way to casino victory, you’ll know that when hitting Blackjack, its customary to call out “Winner, winner chicken dinner.” Well for the parents out there who have fussy eaters, you know that mealtime can be just as ruthless as high-stakes gambling. Both of them are based on trial and error with the wishful hope that , even just once, you’ll hit it right. Eventually the slot machine will pay out or, in your world little Jr. will eat his chicken nuggets and you too will feel victorious, calling out “Winner, winner chicken dinner!”
Sounds great, right? Well I, like the M.I.T. math team, have a few tricks up my sleeves to make mealtime a non-losing proposition. First, get your child their own special silverware and cutlery. Kids love the idea that something is strictly theirs (as in “MINE…MINE!) Having a special cup, fork spoon and plate will give a sense of ownership and excitement, disarming their “food guard” and making them more apt to trying something new.
My favorite sets are from Sugar Booger. Their products are lead-free, BPA-free and meet European and American standards of safety, so there are no health concerns about putting hot or cold food on top of them. The divided plates are $16 and come in fun themes, that you can buy tailored to your child’s interests (ie. monsters and robots). Cutlery are sold separately for $8 and come with a carrying case, which is a great tool to bring with you on the go when dining out with a fussy eater.
My favorite trick is to make mealtime into a game. Play restaurant or go on a pretend picnic. The retro-looking Sugar Booger melamine tray sets ($24) are perfect for an imaginative mealtime. Serve the food directly on the divided tray while playing airline. You can even announce your current cruising altitude after each bite just to get a giggle.
Try them out. These tricks are sure to put the odds in your favor. After all, it’s your kitchen and remember, the house always wins!
